The 7 types of travelers who visit Bacalar and exactly what they look for in their experience – By Arturo Ruiz

Bacalar has a magic that can be felt from the very first moment. No matter how many times you visit the Lagoon of Seven Colors, it always surprises you in a different way. And something very interesting is that, over time, those of us who work closely with the destination have learned that not all travelers come for the same reason. Each profile seeks something very specific… and Bacalar, honestly, has the capacity to connect with everyone.

In this blog, I share with you (just like the colors of the lagoon) the 7 types of travelers who arrive in Bacalar and exactly what they seek during their stay. Perhaps you will identify with one… or several.

1. The traveler seeking to disconnect from the world

This is the traveler who arrives in Bacalar with a well-defined intention: to breathe, let go of stress, and have a real encounter with themselves. They do not need grand plans; in fact, the simpler, the better for them. You see this type of traveler enjoying a sunrise in silence, walking along the shore, reading in front of the pier, or simply contemplating how the lagoon changes color throughout the day. It sounds simple, but for them, it is a captivating experience. These travelers usually choose spaces where harmony, nature, and privacy are a priority. And here, something few people know, is that the southern area between Xul-Ha and downtown Bacalar is their favorite, because it is where the colors of the lagoon become clearer and more majestic. Here, the experience of enjoying the jungle and the lagoon is unique. Only a privileged few experience that authentic tranquility.

2. The adventurous (but conscious) traveler

This traveler loves to explore on their own, but always in a respectful manner. It is not about “doing everything,” but about discovering experiences that connect with the destination without damaging it.

They look for activities such as:

  • Sailing
  • Sunrise paddleboarding
  • Kayaking
  • Nature trails
  • Visits to cenotes and canals

These are people who, even with an exploring spirit, understand the importance of caring for the lagoon, following navigation rules, and supporting certified local providers. And if they can also stay near the water, surrounded by vegetation and with architecture integrated into the environment, all the better.

3. The foodie traveler seeking authentic flavors

Another type of visitor we often find in Bacalar is the one who travels to eat. They are fascinated by local flavors, markets, emerging gastronomic projects, and everything with an identity.

These travelers look for:

  • Authentic proposals
  • Fresh ingredients
  • Local cooks
  • Quiet gastronomic routes

Curiously, they are usually the ones who ask the most about the culture, history, and roots of the destination, because they want to understand where those flavors they enjoy so much come from.

4. The wellness traveler: coming to heal

This profile has grown tremendously in Bacalar over recent years. These are people looking for a destination that helps them reconnect body, mind, and spirit. For them, Bacalar is almost a natural sanctuary.

They look for experiences such as:

  • Temazcales
  • Holistic retreats
  • Massages and spa rituals
  • Yoga classes with lagoon views
  • More natural food options

They are also travelers who highly value privacy, harmonious architecture, and premium spaces that truly respect the ecosystem. For this group, Bacalar is perfect because here nature embraces, calms, and transforms.

5. The premium traveler: wanting the best of the destination

This is the traveler seeking exclusivity, design, quality service, and authentic—not ostentatious—luxury experiences. For them, true luxury is privacy, silence, direct access to the water, and the possibility of personalized services; they are generally experienced travelers. Interestingly, they aren’t looking for “big” or crowded hotels. They prefer developments with architectural vision, identity, and places where every detail is considered. And once again, something arises that I have personally seen a lot at Select Realty Mexico: Premium travelers usually choose the southern zone because, in addition to the lagoon’s best hues, there is a sense of peace that practically doesn’t exist in other Caribbean destinations. It is a unique area… and those who know it, treasure it.

6. The romantic traveler: couples, honeymooners, and special getaways

Bacalar is a romantic destination by nature.

The colors of the water, the wooden piers, the incredible pink sunsets, and the absolute calm are the perfect setting for:

  • Proposals
  • Anniversaries
  • Couples’ trips
  • Photo shoots
  • Weekend “escapes”

This traveler seeks privacy, intimate corners, and gentle experiences like sailing at sunset, dining by the pier, or enjoying a suite with a lagoon view. They tend to be the ones who recommend Bacalar most passionately, because for them it becomes an emotional memory, not just another vacation.

7. The traveler looking to invest while still enjoying

This is a very specific profile, and we see it more every day: the traveler who wants to get to know the destination before investing, or who travels precisely because they are evaluating investment options.

It is someone who wants to:

  • Explore different points of the destination
  • Compare areas
  • Learn about safety, accessibility, and service levels
  • Understand the real market offerings facing the lagoon
  • Gauge what type of tourism arrives and how much they pay

And the most curious thing is that, after visiting Bacalar, almost everyone agrees on the same thing: the southern zone—between Xul-Ha and downtown—feels different. There is a quieter vibe, a stronger connection with the lagoon, and a more exclusive and private atmosphere. Naturally, these travelers lean toward premium projects that are responsible with their surroundings.

They are people looking for the perfect combination of:

  • Personal use
  • Profitability
  • Legal certainty
  • Prime locations

And Bacalar, to be honest, has that potential.

In short…

Bacalar is a destination with a very special essence. It attracts very different travelers, each with their own particular way of discovering and enjoying it. But something I have seen time and again (and that you, reading this blog, will surely notice when you come) is that everyone agrees on the feeling of peace, beauty, and authenticity that can only be experienced here. Whether you visit Bacalar to disconnect, explore, eat well, heal, celebrate a special occasion with your partner, or even evaluate an investment, this lagoon always gives you something: calm and a deep connection with nature. And if you ever need recommendations for the destination or want to understand more about the best areas to stay or invest, I’ll be happy to help. Bacalar is a place worth knowing… and enjoying from the heart.
