The Jaguar Park in Tulum

It has been announced that within the Works Program for the Strengthening of Cancun and Tulum by Sedatu, together with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), they will start a new project in Tulum, the so-called the Jaguar Park will have an area of almost 300,000 hectares, making it the second largest reserve in the state after the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve.

The main purpose is to promote the preservation of the natural and cultural wealth of the Riviera Maya, turning it into a kind of conservation sanctuary that will include the restoration of damaged areas, as well as the development of various protection strategies for endemic species such as the jaguar.

It has been announced that a large part of the land belonged to the government, which has donated it for integration into the program. In addition to the park, it seeks to delimit a new protected natural area of more than 250 thousand hectares with the possibility of annexing the existing more than 660 thousand hectares of the Tulum National Park, and this new reserve is expected to be the entrance to the archaeological zone. In addition to Tulum, land will be recovered to expand the protected areas in Uxmal, Palenque, Chichén Itzá and Calakmul.

This way the Jaguar Park seeks to attract more visitors while raising awareness of the importance of taking care of the environment in Tulum.

Projects such as the Jaguar Park and the Tulum International Airport will gradually form a new Tulum, with greater infrastructure and environmental awareness, which should conclude works by December of this year.
