The Mayan Train project will benefit both the Riviera Maya and the other 4 states that will be connected to each other. Its purpose is to provide a better quality of life for people, promoting tourist destinations and creating thousands of jobs, estimating an economic impact of up to 35,000 million pesos, all this process in a conscious and sustainable way with the environment.
It will cover a distance of approximately 1,500 km and will pass through the states of Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo.
In a preliminary way, the Mayan Train has defined 18 stations and 8 stops along the traced route, considering factors such as sites of interest for both passengers and cargo transport.
The stations contemplated so far are the following, considering the addition of some as the Mayan Train increases its demand:
- Palenque, Chiapas
- Boca del Cerro, Tabasco
- El Triunfo, Tabasco
- Escárcega, Campeche
- San Francisco de Campeche, Campeche
- Xpujil, Campeche
- Mérida, Yucatán
- Izamal, Yucatán
- Chichén Itzá, Yucatán
- Valladolid, Yucatán
- Nuevo Xcán, Quintana Roo
- Cancun, Quintana Roo
- Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo
- Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo
- Tulum, Quintana Roo
- Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Quintana Roo
- Bacalar, Quintana Roo
- Chetumal, Quintana Roo
The main benefit of the Mayan Train in the Riviera Maya and the other states is the opportunity for a generalized means of transport, achieving the union between urban and rural centers.
Although the rates have not been defined, a price list is guaranteed that includes tourists, nationals, foreigners, as well as a preferential price for the local population, seeking to compete with the transport services already existing in the region.
On the other hand, the issue of environmental impact has certainly created controversy, however, it should be noted that the Mayan Train works hand in hand with more than 100 specialists and academics in ecological management of infrastructure projects, receiving support from various research centers and dependencies of the Government of Mexico such as the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT).
The various local ecosystems have been investigated, diagnosed and predicted to take the best environmental measures, protecting the flora and fauna of the region. Some measures include the creation of wildlife crossings (elevated and underground) and the reintegration of species to their habitat.
The works of the Mayan Train have passed under the supervision and approval of environmental studies required by the authorities at the federal, state and municipal levels, having their authorization and being forced to follow their construction guidelines.
Diesel-electric locomotives will be implemented, such as those existing in renowned places such as the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia. This factor allows energy efficiency, lower environmental impact as well as cost reduction, where 40% of the route will be fully electric. Thanks to its easy operation and maintenance, it is possible to provide an even more efficient and reliable service.
The Riviera Maya, being one of the most important tourist centers in the country, recognizes the economic and social benefits that tourism brings, but is aware that its management must be adequate, emphasizing the protection and conservation of the ecosystem.
The Mayan Train is a reality, with work in progress on the existing sections of railway tracks, where in a couple of years we will witness one of the most important projects in Mexico.
