The new Bacalar Ecopark is a must-visit during your next trip to this paradise in Quintana Roo. Located in the magical Lagoon of Seven Colors, this development spans 7,000 square meters and offers areas for both locals and tourists.
Situated next to the Ejidal Beach, 500 meters from the San Felipe Fort, the Ecopark is accessible by foot or by vehicle.
Inside the park, there is a beautiful one-kilometer-long tourist pier, perfect for walking, taking photos, and enjoying the view of the lagoon. This pier surrounds the mangrove and is designed to highlight the local identity, with the aim of becoming a prominent attraction in Bacalar. Some of the pier’s boards feature a museography that describes the region’s ecosystem.
Bacalar Ecopark Project Description
The pier, 200 meters per side and oriented to the north, has a variable height to avoid touching the mangrove or trees, gently sliding towards the lagoon. The solid spaces house a research laboratory and services, which can extend to a shaded area provided by tall trees.
The structural system, built with local and certified chicozapote wood, is efficient and multifunctional, serving as a column, beam, and foundation at the same time.
Additionally, a scale museography has been incorporated along the route, representing a 10,000-year timeline that narrates the history of Bacalar’s unique biodiversity. This museography invites visitors to raise awareness and conserve the area, promoting the social management of a public and free space for the inhabitants of Bacalar.
The main strategy of the project was to minimize environmental impact, allowing visitors to enjoy the natural richness of the site’s flora and fauna.
Commitment to Preservation
The Ecopark is located in a 5-hectare Protected Natural Area, so visitors are advised to avoid any environmental impact, such as littering or swimming with sunscreen. It is crucial to care for the stromatolites, organisms that keep the lagoon clean and maintain its beautiful blue hues.
The park also includes a classroom, laboratory, meeting room, open spaces, restrooms, and a small commercial area. In the classroom, educational talks on the ecological preservation of Bacalar Lagoon and the care of stromatolites will be offered.
Come and enjoy this space that combines nature and education in one place.
